I remember seeing a movie posted in Gonintendo a while back that showed that the Ice key you get in Banjo-Kazooie unlocks the Ice key in Donkey Kong 64 through the use of "Stop N Swop".

I remember that ice key. Spent a while trying to figure out what it's purpose was before eventually giving up.

"The way Stop 'N' Swop was meant to work originally was that there's parts in the original Banjo that weren't unlocked until the original Banjo realised you'd been playing the sequel, which we had to change because of the evolution of the hardware of the N64. It would've worked on early N64s but not the later ones," said Fileccia.

"So that's why we never actually released it. It was my job to actually finish it off, so you can't imagine how many fans hate me because of that! So what we're doing now is literally the same thing, so there is unlockables in both games that are accessible once both games realise you've been playing the other one."

So it immediately notices and unlocks, rather than asking you to do stuff in-game? "No, that in turn unlocks bits that you can use and so forth. I think that's about as far as I'm allowed to go!"

@TOLLMASTER - Wow, that's really interesting! I never knew any of those features existed so maybe the "Ice Key" has a purpose in the X360 game? That would be a great way for Rare to play with their fans.

Dedicated ROM hackers found a "Stop and Swap" feature in the ROM of the original Banjo-Kazooie, which lead to a lot of speculation among the fanbase that you would be able to unlock content in a sequel by pausing one game and putting in Banjo's sequel--the N64 not "locking" in carts like many other systems. Rumors were further fed because there was some kind of "ice key" that was unattainable in Banjo-Kazooie which character dialogue made it seem like was meant to be unlocked in a sequel somehow.

As far as I know, nothing came of these plans when the sequel to the original game did come out on the N64, and it was a hot topic on Rare's mailbag website what the original plan was for this. I'm guessing the "Stop and Swop" feature is a kind of way for Rare to poke fun at their old fanbase.
